The Core Promise

Most Northern Lights tours in Lapland are built around one number: your chances of seeing the aurora tonight. We built ours around something we can promise instead, a genuinely comfortable, thoughtfully hosted evening in the Arctic night, worth your time whether the sky performs or not. If the aurora appears, it becomes the highlight of an evening that was already worth having.

How the Evening Unfolds

Here is exactly what an evening with us looks like, start to finish.

01We collect you in comfort

You are picked up from your hotel or a central meeting point in Rovaniemi or Kemi in a Mercedes van designed for long Arctic evenings. Spacious, quiet, and thoughtfully equipped. Curtains on every window help preserve your night vision from the very beginning, while a Webasto heater keeps the cabin warm even with the engine switched off.

Your tour time is the pickup time of the first guest. We collect everyone in order of location, so your own pickup may be up to 45 minutes later, depending on distance and road conditions. You’ll receive your approximate pickup time on the morning of the tour.

02The story begins on the road

The drive is part of the experience, not simply the journey to it. Along the way, tablets with interactive content take you into the science behind the aurora, the folklore of Finnish Lapland, and the stories that have shaped this region for generations. Once we arrive at the spot, your guide carries the stories on in person by the campfire, including one we’ll leave for you to discover on the night.

Our guides are local Finns with professional driver’s licenses, trained in the real history of Lapland from local books and materials, not from a quick search online.

03Arriving at a place made for staying

We drive to one carefully chosen spot and make it home for the evening. A campfire, reindeer hides, hot drinks, and Finnish snacks are waiting when you arrive, so you can settle in instead of standing in the cold.

We have a few chosen spots around both Rovaniemi and Kemi, and each night we go to the one with the best chance of a clear sky, then stay there. The evening lasts three to five hours in total, pickups and driving included, depending on which spot we go to and how long it takes to collect everyone.

04A shared moment of silence

At one point during the evening, your guide invites everyone to spend a few minutes in silence. It takes about twenty minutes for our eyes to fully adjust to the dark, and even a quick look at a bright screen can interrupt that process. We put our phones away, let our eyes adapt, and simply enjoy the Arctic night together.

05Real photographs of your evening

Your guide photographs the evening as it unfolds, so you can enjoy the moment without worrying about getting the perfect shot.

06A keepsake that isn’t a certificate

Before we head back to town, you’ll receive a Polaroid from the evening along with a small reflective keepsake. They’re simple reminders of a night you’ll want to remember long after you’ve gone home.

What happens if the aurora doesn’t appear?

Even people who live here see an aurora that fills the whole sky only a few times in their lives, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Nature decides what happens in the sky. We take care of everything else. You’ll still spend the evening in a beautiful place, hear the stories of Lapland, enjoy good company and warm drinks by the fire, and leave with photographs and memories that don’t depend on the weather. If the aurora appears, it will make the evening even more memorable. If it doesn’t, you’ll still go home having experienced something worth coming for.

Everyone Has a Place With Us

Our evenings are designed for everyone. Every van is fully wheelchair accessible, making Vulpes Aurora one of the few Northern Lights experiences in Rovaniemi and Kemi that can welcome guests with reduced mobility without compromise. When a wheelchair user joins the evening, the group is limited to five guests in total, so everyone has room to move comfortably. Please let us know about a wheelchair when you book.

Families are equally at home here. Younger guests can enjoy coloring books and their own turn at the telescope while the evening unfolds at a pace everyone can enjoy. One parent stays with the children at all times.

Not the right fit if you want to drive all night chasing the aurora at any cost. There are tours built for that, and this isn’t one of them.
